Authenticity blues
Authenticity is prized as something that seems organic, natural or forthright. This leads to people trying to anchor themselves to values that they would unchain them from outside influences. This can be seen as a noble venture but sometimes the quest to be genuine comes with various drawbacks. The first thing what is it to be actually “genuine”. Does it mean to be brash and unapologetic to everybody else? Does it mean eschewing yourself from certain responsibilities? A pertaining reality that should be understood is that our selves are not inherently unique but are shaped by things or events outside our domain. This is where we get our values or perspectives in life which inform our approaches or behaviour. So what is to be really authentic. Just be true to yourself I guess or find a north star that guides all the actions that you make.
Rushing in.
The digital age is rife with mini texts, clips that are shared for engagement and reactions to the wider public. This leads to a vicious cycle where certain statements are taken out of context without proper analysis or nuance which muddies such conversations. This leads to judgment from people who usually see judging as a tool only applied when their own perspectives are threatened but ignored otherwise.
The individual who shared the initial post sometimes apologizes or shares a follow up post but that hardly gets more reach than the initial post. This creates awkward scenarios where people are bashed, insulted or mocked but later shown to actually be right. When such viral moments occur, kindly approach the situation with grace before making statements that would make you foolish in the future
