Welcome to The Layout #91, the Substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources to help you level up. It’s been a while, but normal business has resumed. This week's poster is basically static
Find the streaks in the static.
Static noise can be well... a little bit stationary, but it is overwhelmed with sameness, which eventually leads to dullness and boredom. The majority run away from static to embrace the dynamic elements of the human experience. This can be hampered by getting trapped in escapism i.e. social media etc. that is dynamic(new content and experiences) which leads to loss of time and self because you absorb everything like a sponge without a solid foundation to filter the noise. Sometimes, we have to look into the static to find the little bits or streaks of dynamism which shine not because they are bright, but because they contrast well with the benign.
It could be worse.
Here comes the occasional whitepill post. I know it looks bad, the efforts aren't bringing results, you are falling back into the bad habits, and so forth. Daily, you nag people about how the world sucks because your situation looks grim, and you make comparisons with others who are doing better. Well, your opinions are valid, but there is one key thing to remember: It could be a lot worse. What do I mean by this? Well, imagine your situation, but 10 times worse, imagine if you haven't even started at all. It looks far away, and it looks bad, but it isn't over. To get over this, be grateful and do a gentle reset, i.e. get back to basic principles and try again. If you feel like this again in the future, just come back to this post for an optimism refill.
