Welcome to The Layout #90, the Substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources to help you level up. It’s been a while but normal business has resumed. This week's poster is a bit eccentric.
People don't tell, they show
You have done the surveys, and the preferences are clear: people like option A more than the other option. Product development has been completed, and your product has been released to the world. Expectations of commercial success are high, but in reality, it doesn't reach the expected heights, and apparently, people like the option they said they hated in your surveys. What is going on? Well, sometimes what people say doesn't match their actions. A unique part of human nature is that sometimes our actions betray our words. This is something to consider when creating things that seem obvious that people in that niche would like, but in reality don't even care about. For example, the IPHONE SE was a reaction because it was assumed that people wanted a small phone. After all, phones were getting too big, and they wanted something they could easily handle. In reality, people like bigger screens and bigger phones because they just do. The kicker is that sometimes people's real choices are hard to believe, but reality tells a different story.
Humility can be a crutch
Being humble is a great quality to have, but it can also be a limitation when it is used in a certain way. This occurs when people treat you in a certain way and take advantage of your humility to manipulate or extract certain things from you. The desire to keep a certain image can blind you to such actions. Humility must be paired with boundaries or rules of engagement for clarity on how the individual operates and effective ways of communication and collaboration. Lots of fancy words, but in summary, lines must be set to ensure that future interactions are clear and free from manipulation
