Welcome to The Layout #86, the Substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources to help you level up. This week's poster is about weird shapes.
Leverage Points
Getting ahead might require long-term planning, but we can also use the concept of leverage points. Leverage points are small changes that can be made and provide exponential results that are very effective. Leverage points are found by searching for the easiest changes that can be made to a routine, system, or workflow that can produce results that cause the greatest amount of changes that can be visibly seen in reality. These could be minor things like getting a new book or a laptop stand, or a simple tech gadget that can drastically change how you do things for the better. These are little optimizations being taken for great results. Also, realize that these optimizations can become a drag if they are done just for the sake of optimizing instead of effective results.
Marinate
Dwell deep in the knowledge that is around you, bask in the pictures and images of your imagination, and thoughts on the subjects you wish to master. Feeding and understanding the techniques of the masters or the pioneers that came before you allowing you to go deeply and essentially be one in how they lived their lives in various contexts and how it can apply today. Here comes the important step, Take some time off. Play a video game, listen to music, don't think too much about this experience. Let it sit deep and then once you are properly relaxed, practice and apply in whatever contexts i.e. drawing, reading, creating music, etc., and repeat again. Try and see.
