Welcome to The Layout #81. The Substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources for you to level up. This week's poster has a blurry vibe.
Avoid Slop
Slop can be defined as something that is made in a sense made purely for mass consumption and for attention. An example could be AI art, which is mostly made to be mass consumed by people for various uses. This inadvertently creates uniform styles that are absorbed by the social milieu defining the creative or social space of the world. This is also exhibited through social media with the constant repetition of the same narratives and agendas that get massive attention, interior design that showcases the same style guides and samey pastel colours with no distinctiveness, which makes everything look the same, etc. This leads to a lack of originality or uniqueness in the things we interact with daily, and this can be shown in media(the same movies, sequels, etc.), and other domains in our daily lives. Filtering what we consume around us is vital because what we consume eventually produces what we create. We must strive daily to always seek content or things that elevate our mind to see things that were unseen or appreciate the things that are done well with skill and attention to detail. It is through all this that great works come forth.
Feel The Pulse
Feeling the pulse of a situation sounds esoteric but is important in understanding contexts or environments that you are in. Situations have emotional wavelengths that can be "felt" i.e. seen through the expressions, feedback of the actors or people around them. To feel requires a suspension of previous assumptions that were previously held, and being in the moment of what is happening around us. This helps us to look into various ways to adapt, create or respond to those situations. This leads to thoughtful and context-driven solutions, that understand the pulse of various situations and make them very effective and memorable in the wider space.
