Welcome to The Layout #80. The Substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources for you to level up. This week's poster certainly has lots of green.
Why is it there?
Change is a constant and necessary dynamic in every environment we are in, but sometimes it can disrupt certain well-laid traditions, concepts, laws, etc., because they are seen as stagnant, archaic, or not modern. Things will eventually need to change, but there are some things that we don't know what they are about or why they were there in the first place, which can lead to some unseen long-term consequences. Every new domain always has new blood that wants to make their mark on the domain's sphere, but most of the time, disregard the traditions of the past and chart a new way forward. This has been shown to create disruptions and new movements within such domains, but with a cost of the traditions that defined the domain previously. This can also lead to a decline in the quality of things produced from those domains. It isn't noticeable in the beginning, but the decline can happen rapidly without any sense of warning or context to what was lost. Having a steady acknowledgment of the past and learning the purpose of those traditions and what they were meant to be used for can save a lot of headaches down the line.
Humility
Humility in various contexts is embracing the spirit of always being a beginner even though you have reached a very high level in your respective domain. This brings a sense of childlike curiosity and naivety to things that seem already obvious to everybody else. This requires flipping our perspective on how things work and always trying to learn something from unexpected places. This creates bursts of creativity that can be harnessed to address problems from areas that are in a sense "out there". Innovation is the combination of elements from various places or domains to create something new that solves unique problems that affect us in our daily lives. So humility could be your best bet in encountering things yet unseen.
