Welcome to The Layout #8. Well, I learnt a lot of new concepts this week which should lead to new insights and thoughts. So let us begin…
The Proper Perspective.
Ever gone through Instagram or checked out the Awwwards site? It looks incredible, doesn't it? You see great work from designers that astound you. Amazing use of typography, colour, and illustrations to make that website which delights users.
This can be overwhelming and it makes us ask a simple question "Will I ever make something good as that?". This can create a sense of dread and apathy in people and this is not only the creative industry but any human venture on the planet. I have been prone to this reality or thought pattern too.
I came upon this perspective which can be used in these scenarios which is "Do not compare your beginnings to someone's ends". This means that the person who posted that great poster design, wallpaper, website etc. did not get there in one day, he had to work behind the scenes with constant practice, dedication, focus etc. This will inevitably lead to more refined and enticing work. You can't compare yourself to someone who has basically a master in his field. It is basically wrong thinking. You should switch the dynamic to something such as "If I apply the same dedication, and focus as this guy, this is what i will be able to make". Simple but powerful.
Step Back A Little Bit.
Sometimes, certain situations or moments can be so engrossing that it prevents us to consider all the consequences, tradeoffs, benefits etc. We as humans get easily tempted to be trapped into things that make us feel validated without considering that thing in a broader context. What I will say is that you have to learn to step back.
Sounds simple but it is very hard to do in our fast-paced society. Just step back, approach the situation as an outsider or neutral and consider your options. This might make you look weird or picky to the outside world but the outside world won't be the one that will bear the consequences in the end.
