Welcome to The Layout #7. This week has been grand with a lot of new design software updates. Some interesting personal developments and epiphanies. So join me then.
Show Your Work.
Most of us fail to do an important and key thing during our design journey which is showing our work. It could be due to fear of negative comments or a sense of feeling like a novice in the field. The harsh reality is if you don't show your work, no one will see you or recognize your skill.
When it comes to posting your work, it feels like exposing your body to the outside world for criticism or unworthy praise. We fear that it can destroy our confidence or give us a feeling of overconfidence. Showing your work is key to doing one thing which is refining your work. In your bubble, you might feel that you are the best there is but when it is shown outside it is exposed to necessary criticism which might refine your work or encourage you to do more.
Obviously, sometimes the public can be wrong or experts might not understand your creative process but it is key to just display your work to kill your fear of the outside world. I battle with this too every day and it does stunt my growth but other people I have seen who show their work constantly have had great results. In other words, this doesn't cost you anything and it might be worthwhile in the end.
Meditating in a unique way.
Everyone's heard of meditation. There are hundreds of meditation apps, blogs, articles etc. out there that I am not going to do a full recap here. There is one thing I have noticed though. They pretty much describe the same method i.e. empty your mind and be one with the universe and all that. This usually means staying in one place and being silent and you know (empty your mind and being one with the universe and all that).
I have always been sceptical about that method. So, I found a better method to meditate. Simply, you are actually doing the opposite which is you are actually filling your mind with helpful things e.g. knowledge, good thoughts etc. to you. This actually is not a mindless venture but requires concentration on the task you are learning or reading. This is necessary to ensure retention or basically, you are being one with the book. I am going to try it out later, you should too.
So long, Leading trim.
FIgma just released a set of 32 updates and they are jampacked with lots of improvements and features which make the whole designing experience easier and fun. Also, they fixed that annoying leading trim which is a plus in my book. No wonder it is still one of the most used design tools on the planet.
