Welcome to The Layout #79 The Substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources for you to level up. This week poster has pastel and classic vibe to it.
Innovation isn’t Iteration
Innovation in the modern space seems similar to iteration, repeating the same elements but with different elements switching around and sometimes, adding an energy boost to increase its capacity. Phones get thinner, screens get larger, processors got faster etc. We likely live in an iteration age instead of the innovation age. Innovation involves taking foundational concepts and mixing them together to create something new and never been seen before. This involves a lot of thinking and frankly, a bit of genius. It is difficult to pull off but wen done, it is glorious for all to see. From this definition, have really being a lot of innovations in the past decade or just grand iterations. Food for thought.
Where’s Your MVP
MVP i.e. Minimum Viable Product is the basic encapsulation of any idea you possess. It is a practical visualization or proof of concept. It also has to be viable (it’s in the name) i.e. work in reality not just in fantasy. The MVP is an effective filter to distinguish ideas that have potential from ones that are just postulations (e.g. (coughs! Nano-technology). It gives off first look if your ideas are even viable and what lacks to initiate thoughtful iterations that eventually lead to a great final product. The key point about MVPs is to carefully pick the audience that will judge it to ensure there is adequate context before user feedback is collected (Seinfield test viewings were seen as a disaster likely due to selection bias). No pressure
