Welcome to The Layout #71. The Substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources for you to level up. It’s been a long hiatus due to some complicated events that will be communicated in future events.
Forget about attention span. focus on the consideration span
Our attention span seems to be getting weaker over the years with the increased consumption of social media which gives us quick dopamine hits with the downside of reducing our capacity to focus and attend to things around us. Or is it, if our attention span is at the same level of a goldfish then how do we listen to 3-hour podcasts or play video games for 5 hours straight. It is true that our attention span has reduced but people will still focus on things that are meaningful or that they find exciting. Literally forget about the attention span, focus on the consideration span. When creating something that is meant for public consumption, shift your focus or objective on getting the consideration of the public, not just to hijack their attention for your own purposes. This means creating things that are meaningful and thoughtful that require slow but worthwhile engagement.
Embrace the Rough Models.
Embracing the rough models of our initial thinking or work process is essential for innovation and creativity. As we start something new, we tend to get discouraged because the initial process or models look too rough or unclear for people to use and solve problems. The rough models start as a beginning point for how the future solution will be and it helps in filtering and getting to the final solution that is required. Rough models are the first step for information clarity and annexing for future reference when solving problems. Embracing them is essential for innovation to occur
