Welcome to The Layout #56. The substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources for you to level up.
Avoid the spike and crash and manage what you need to win.
Performing tasks that we love often follows a certain pattern, extreme enthusiasm, and performance in the early stages of implementation and iterations. Then follows fatigue and dread in the final stages, eventually leading to a crash in energy and mental alertness until the finish line is crossed. This is common when performing high-level tasks that we enjoy and love. We must learn to avoid the spike and focus on managing our emotional and physical energy as we try to complete these tasks. We should think of it as a marathon, not a sprint. Take adequate rest and breaks and break down your tasks into simpler forms to avoid dread and fatigue. Take care!
Make entry points accessible.
Learning new things or undertaking new roles can be troublesome. An easy way to start is to make your entry points accessible. An entry point means how easily you can easily get into something quickly. Is it accessible, easy to use, etc. For example, I want to run 5 times a week. My entry point will be my running shoes and clothes that will be laid the night before, making that habit easier to form. We need to make our entry points to new habits or skills accessible to us or we will lose interest due to intense difficulty or just plain boredom. The routine must be part of our daily life or it will just remain a figment of what we were meant to be.
