Welcome to The Layout #47. The substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources for you to level up. Welcome back everyone, It’s been a good week. Let’s get on with it
Filling the Roadmap
When breaking new ground or starting a new project, a tendency to get distracted by shiny new toys that will derail what you have planned. Filling a roadmap with what needs to be done with timelines(the most important thing for this to be effective) to achieve your goal is vital for project completion. What should also be added to your roadmap are the adequate systems needed to ensure progress on the various tasks regardless of the situation you find yourself in. These systems are needed to prevent burnout or boredom. This could be just writing 50 words every day or designing a button or a webpage daily etc. Systems that energize you and are aligned with your energy levels instead of time.
What Would Your Ideal Self Do?
The majority of the things that exist had initial pushback, Barbie Dolls, Vipers, iPhones, etc. These products had pushback because they flipped the status quo on how things were meant to be done and upended established thinking about products. When making something, do note the type of pushback that you get from the outside world. Now, this doesn't mean that all pushback or negative feedback is bad or useless. The key is to discern the feedback that is meaningful and adheres to reality and ignore the ones who are just reactionary. Also, one important thing you should notice is whether your core customer will be interested in the products you make and how it changes their situation or for the worse.
