Welcome to The Layout #46. The substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources for you to level up. Welcome back everyone, It’s been a good week. Let’s get on with it
Cultivating High Taste.
Taste can be cultivated by appreciating the inner details of mundane or repetitive things. Things such as melodies, food, drink, etc. Appreciating the elements that are being combined to create such items, hones the ability to deconstruct those items to create innovations. To cultivate high taste though, requires constant interactions with things that elevate the individual to a transcendent plane or give a sense of purpose and finality. It could be food that changes your taste buds forever or a classical sonnet that gives humanity a divine lift. High taste leads to a complete change in your thought process regarding things you listen to, eat, sing, watch, etc., and will change how you see things for the rest of your life. I will go deeper into this in a special post.
What Would Your Ideal Self Do?
There is a tendency to mock the ideal for being impractical in modern times but misses the point about idealism. Ideals are values or virtues that can't be followed through 100% of the time due to man's inbuilt faults but they can be done at least 95% of the time. Ideals are meant to be North Stars, followed to give a sense of direction, purpose, and stability in your life. So when trying to do something, you can ask yourself this simple question "What Would Your Ideal Self Do?" i.e. What would the ideal version of yourself imbued with values and virtues do in that situation you face? This paradigm will only succeed in your life if you make this question a central mental block before making key decisions that affect your well-being. Toodles.
