Welcome to The Layout #42. The substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources for you to level up. Welcome back everyone, It’s been a good week. Let’s get on with it
Reframing Pleasure.
What if we have pleasure all wrong? Think about it. Every book you have read tells you that you must stay away from the things that give you a lot of pleasure and focus on the things that cause discomfort to build resilience and steadfastness. What if you are approaching this wrong? What if the things that cause discomfort bring pleasure? Think about it, reframing your mind to think in this way makes forming habits easier without wasting a lot of willpower. In a sense, the things that are hard or stressful give you a sense of joy that you won’t get when you do other things. Give it a try this week
Was it there before?
When there are narratives about how a certain industry e.g. crypto etc. or any innovation, individuals are why a certain situation is happening, the key question that should be asked is why didn’t this happen before? This means that the people being blamed now for a certain situation didn’t do such actions previously but are targeted as the cause of the whole situation. The question should lead people to ask what systemic changes may have happened to have caused this change in behaviour. In other words, the reason why this is happening now but not before e.g. what incentives have changed, what policies have been added, what moral hazards exist now, etc.
