Welcome to The Layout #40. The substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources for you to level up. Welcome back everyone, It’s been a good week. Let’s get on with it
Persuade, don't bully
Persuasion is when you can effectively change someone's view regarding a subject willingly without the use of force or threats. This means understanding the person's POV and trying to put your insights through common ground. Persuasion is effective because it changes a conversation from a "who knows best" to a "how do we resolve this" situation. I have noticed a weird phenomenon nowadays where people mock and bully people who don't live according to their views and values and support personalities they dislike. Sometimes it is fine to call out great atrocities and so forth but most of the time, it is taken to the extreme for even minor issues in the scheme of things. The reality is when you keep mocking or bullying people regarding their detestable views, they don't experience epiphanies or change, they dig deeper because they feel that the world is against them so they must be right after all. This causes them to dig a deeper hole for themselves regarding their worldview. To change someone is not by pointing a gun to their head but by actually persuading the person. This involves understanding that individual situation or context before making judgments. This obviously, doesn't apply to all situations.
Communicate with others in mind.
communication comes in different forms but its primary goal is to send a message to its intended receiver. Communication with others in mind is tuning our message so that people who will communicate with us can understand. Well, to most people this is pretty obvious and true. What I would like to focus on is tailoring our message to the people who need to hear it not to our ears. Let's say you are a designer and you are going to present something to business-minded people. You have to tune your presentation in a way that they can quickly grasp and understand e.g. statistics, key results, charts, etc. for effective communication. Learning this skill is key for navigating the world we have currently and it is not hard but takes a little practice.
