Welcome to The Layout #39. The substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources for you to level up. Welcome back everyone, It’s been a long break. Now let’s get on with it
Read Old Books.
To innovate for the new age, we can't forget the past. The obvious secret about creating new things is to look at the past and see how it was done before. That's why we have mood boards or go to stack overflow to see what was implemented in the past to create something new. The flaw in these methods is we tend to just look at the visible image i.e. What is being seen without considering what were the thought processes or decisions that led to that output. So for a complete understanding, we can strive to read the old books not just the book covers to understand how the early pioneers reached their conclusions and how we can take it to the next level.
Luck Surface Area
Reading The Millionaire Next Door, the author summarized that if you do the steps outlined by the people he interviewed, wealth is guaranteed. He may have a point but he discounts the importance of luck in our lives. Sometimes you might go to the perfect school or the perfect workplace and in the end, you might not still be rich. You might be very frugal and hardworking and still not be wealthy. These factors are important but there is a key factor that determines success. Luck. Christians call it Grace. It could being at the right place at the right time, It could also mean someone noticing your work and highlighting it for others to see, etc. To your chances of being lucky, you have to increase your Luck Surface Area (LSA). This means you need to post that work that you are uncomfortable about, show up every day to do something even though it feels meaningless, hang out at events to meet new people, etc. Basic things that feel pointless can slightly give you a better chance of success. Take care.
