Welcome to The Layout #36. The substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources for you to level up. Now, let’s get on with it.
Get Out Of A Rut
It's easy to get stuck in ruts, you know. It can come when certain things don't go to plan and you feel distraught. It also happens when you start asking yourself serious questions e.g. Will this work for me?, Am I capable of actually pulling this off?, Is this my highest potential? etc. Ruts may seem trivial or temporary, but they can permanently lead you astray from your goals. Ruts are inevitable in our daily lives. The key question is how do I escape it? You escape the rut by doing one thing. Don't focus on the huge routine i.e. coding for 3 hours, designing for hours, etc. Focus on doing just one thing could be a pushup, a simple design, a layer of code, 3 lines of writing. etc. Steady encouragement for those who get into ruts and escape them.
Decurb Your Enthusiasm
Enthusiasm creates life and brings energy into any activity that it encounters. It creates something magnetic in people that also attracts people to their orbit. It is also can be very hard to create or use. Enthusiasm can be created not by just perchance or just sitting by. It is created by being enthusiastic i.e. caring a lot about the things you do. Even though the tasks are tedious, boring, or just not worth it in any capacity. The thing is, if you can't be enthusiastic at the little things, how will you be enthusiastic at the big things and deliver the big results? This doesn't just apply to work but to every area of your life. The mental loop you should have is this 'I have two options, I could either be sad or happy about this moment. Why don't I pick the one that gives me energy for that moment". Also, a little trap for very smart people regarding this is that we tend to stay neutral, not picking a side to avoid certain drawbacks but this can create certain impressions among people of being laid back or laggy. I am guilty of this(lol, of course, I am smart) but there is room for improvement.
