Welcome to The Layout #35. The substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources for you to level up. Now, let’s get on with it.
Understanding the language
Understanding the language of your surroundings is not just in terms of verbal feedback but in body language, social cues, etc. which can help in communicating your ideas more effectively. As creative types, there is difficulty in communicating certain ideas to people who don't understand basic principles regarding those ideas which leads to confusion. A major principle for understanding the language is to put yourself in the listener's shoes i.e. empathize. This involves looking into how the listener communicates and tweaking your message to fit that criteria for effective communication. This could mean preparing a huge data set or lots of slides etc. to justify your creative decisions. This is tedious but in the long run, it pays off.
