Welcome to The Layout #32. The substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources for you to level up. Now, let’s get on with it.
Caring is good.
Everyone tells you not to care but caring is good. It is good to care about your work, loved ones, community, etc. Caring is a sense of companionship and investment. Call it emotional skin in the game. This benign but simple gesture makes us invested in what we do and the people around us. There is only one thing to be watchful for, caring if taken to an extreme length can lead to flaws or bad decisions due to blindspots when looking at certain problems that affect our work, ego, families, etc. Caring is good but must be tempered with wisdom and foresight or it will turn destructive and take a dark turn.
Sometimes, it goes sideways.
When applying certain concepts to our work, it can go sideways. maybe you are experimenting with different methodologies and it doesn't come out as a well-finished product. This can make us distraught and lose confidence because of the effort and time we put into those projects.
The key thing to realize is that for something to end, there must be a beginning. Beginnings may be awkward or look like a waste of time but if looked at in a certain way, it can bring new insights and perspectives that have never been seen before. This can then be applied in conjunction with standard design methodologies or ideas that bring innovative and unique products to the world.
What inspired the above post was that I found out that the Grand Theft Auto Series started as an accident. It was meant to be a standard racing game but there was a bug in the system which made the Cop cars go wild and well, the rest is history.
