Welcome to The Layout #30. The substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources for you to level up. Now, let’s get on with it.
Cast all into the fire.
We may learn all the fancy design theories or examples. You can read all the various case studies that give a grasp on the multifunctionality or adaptiveness of various solutions but nothing prepares you for the fire of reality. Certain projects or situations will call for the burning of previous logic or theories being held. When we cast our presumptions and knowledge learned before in the fire, It melts into liquid which can be melded and formed to adapt to that situation in which we struggle to comprehend.
Great innovations happen when we burn the things we have learned previously not for destruction but for the creation of liquid that can be cast into new objects for appreciation and crest.
Find the Thin Line
We tend to push ourselves when starting. Trying different things in the hopes of quick improvement and recognition. This is an optimal strategy for exponential growth but it does take time to succeed.
In the pursuit of this, we tend to go over our thin line i.e. our point of exhaustion. This is the point where when you go over, there will be burnout, pain, etc. Some people recommend never crossing the thin line to avoid such realities, and this is true.
This also means that you shouldn't try to reach it once in a while. Thin lines are nature's way of telling you to optimize certain things e.g. productivity, health, etc.
It is like a warning symbol telling you that if you cross it, there will be consequences because certain things are not in place. Think of it as exercise when you have to increase the intensity when it starts to get a little easier. Do take care.
