Welcome to The Layout #29. The substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources for you to level up. Now, let’s get on with it.
Context is everything
Understanding the context relating to certain situations or experiences can help us become better designers and better humans.
There is a human tendency to rush into a situation and perform certain actions without understanding the context. Context could mean how this got here. What is the relationship of the subject to this matter? Is this situation a regular occurrence? Have any solutions been tried before? e.t.c.
Understanding the context of certain situations through basic research can uncover a lot of bad assumptions and lead you to why certain situations exist and how to solve them concerning your problem.
We essentially miss the context regarding certain situations due to a lack of basic research and the refusal of old assumptions being applied to current situations. This should make you realize that Context unlocks understanding.
Practice unlocks consumption
Everyone talks about excessive social media consumption and how it reshapes our daily lives. Let's talk about design overconsumption! There is a tendency to read too many design blogs, articles, tutorials, etc. but somehow our skill levels are not improving and our design process feels static.
Consumption of this information isn't bad. The issue really could be that the information being consumed isn't integrated into our daily tasks or we are not even trying out these new design processes on new projects. So it is good to consume great content but practice and integration are essential to make it effective
