Welcome to The Layout #28. The substack about design that makes life a little easier with fun insights and key resources for you to level up. Now, let’s get on with it.
Appreciating The Old To Reclaim The New.
Society is nowadays imbued with nostalgia. It is something that regulates most of our discussions about science, politics, movies, design etc. Nostalgia isn't a bad thing. It is good to remember the strengths and triumphs of people who lived before but also their weaknesses to prevent future failures.
Nostalgia can also be a trap in the sense that we directly import those thought processes into our current environment without taking note of what actually brought those in the first place. Nostalgia or the past should be used as a guide to innovate today. It should be something that should be dwelt on for the sake of appreciation and creating something new.
If not, It can become a mental trap which makes people avoid new concepts just for the sake of it.
Understanding resistance
Resistance is something that affects us all. Want to start a project or a piece of work? You notice something like a force telling you to stay where you are.
It tells you subconsciously that you should rest a little bit, you are probably not ready yet or you should wait for the right time to do it.
It makes you more susceptible to procrastination. This force is the one that makes you struggle to sit down to study or work on things that will help you.
This unseen force can have dire consequences for yourself, work and so on. Overcoming resistance is necessary for all to do to achieve. I will probably write more on this next week.
