One of the fundamental principles that designers have to learn is The Layout. I even have a substack series called The Layout(shameless plug please subscribe.).
Why is layout such a fundamental principle in design and in life? It is fundamental because it is one of the first things we see, feel, hear, etc. It is just not physical or digital objects. It could be musical in nature i.e. the arrangement of certain musical notes that give a sense of order or disorder through a melody or a beat. Most designers struggle with learning Layouts (including me). We have to start with the fundamentals, then also we have to learn to break them to create visual interest and variety. It could take months or years before you can master this skill.
I stumbled upon a mind heuristic that changed how I viewed layouts forever. I woke up one morning and I looked at my room’s door. I saw it was arranged in a specific way to allow me to go outside my room. I also saw the arrangement of the bulb, electric fan, etc. coincided with the placement of the door. It made me realize that if you look around your environment. You will see a lot of things that are laid out to fit a purpose
Typing this on a keyboard makes me look at how my laptop keyboard has been laid out with respect to my touchpad to improve my workflow. Looking at a beauty product and seeing how the text on the packaging is laid out to show the product's features. Also, Its container is laid out in such a way as to allow easy access for its users.
Layouts are everywhere. They are on our physical bodies, the earth we work on(earth patterns). Some things we perceive as disorder can actually be patterns that can be seen as a Layout. It depends on whether we can perform two things very well which are whether we can look very deeply into arbitrary things that are common to us or we can step back and embrace the order and design all around us.
