Empathy Has It’s Place
Empathy is putting yourself in the shoes of people, which can give you an idea of their daily experiences or worldview. This is useful in creating new products or services by understanding the user's POV to create useful products that they would love. One key point about empathy is that it has its place in the creative process but is not a totality. This means there are certain scenarios where empathy isn’t necessary. Some products, e.g., iPhone, were created with a mixture of empathy and foresight. Focusing on the iPhone here, this product removed the keyboard which according to standard empathetic thought was a faux pas and disregarded the user but it was still successful due to the intuitiveness of its capacitive touchscreen and its friendly interface. This feature was successful though because there was a thought to elevate the user to new experiences that it has never seen before. In summary, there is a place for empathy but it is just a mental model, other scenarios and methods can also exist.
